Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these treatments must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
